[ Substance 3D Painter ] How to paint using projection tools

You can use the projection tool to paint imported textures onto the mesh.
Painting with the projection tool allows you to project onto the mesh according to the camera's perspective.

In this article, I would like to check how to paint using projection tools and display settings.

How to use projection tools

  1. Select the texture set you want to edit from [ Texture Set List ].
  2. Click the [ Add layer ] icon to add a paint layer.
  3. Click the [ Projection ] button on the left side of the screen and select the projection tool.
    Click the [ Projection ] button to switch to a semi-transparent screen on the viewport.
  4. Select the imported textures from [ Assets ] and drag and drop them onto each channel.
    Example: Here I am using Base Color, Roughness, and Normal.
    ・Drag and drop the base color texture to [ Base color ].
    ・Drag and drop the roughness texture to [ Roughness ].
    ・Drag and drop the normal texture to [ Normal ].
  5. You can adjust the position, angle, and scale of the projection by holding down the [ S ] key while in the viewport in combination with the following mouse buttons:
    change position
    [ S ] key + middle click
    ・adjust scale
    [ S ] key + right click
    ・adjust the angle
    [ S ] key + left click
    ・snap angle
    [ S ] key + left click + Shift
  6. If tiling is required, set it here.
  7. Select [ presets > brushes ] from [ Assets ] and select the brush you want.
    Set the brush size, opacity, angle, blur level, etc.

Brush size
Ctrl + right click + slide left/right
Brush blur level
Ctrl + right click + slide up/down
Brush opacity
Ctrl + left click + slide left/right
Brush angle
Ctrl + left click + slide up/down

Projection display settings

You can change the projection display settings from the [ Display Settings ] icon on the right side of the screen.

Hide stencil when painting
You can show or hide projections while painting.

Stencil display opacity
You can change the opacity of the projection.

Projection preview channel
You can switch between projections to display textures for each channel.
