[ Substance 3D Painter ] About layer instancing

One useful feature for creating textures is instances.
If parts with the same texture exist in other texture sets, by instantiating the layer, you can efficiently create the texture without having to do the same work again.

In this article, I would like to review layer instantiation.

About layer instancing

It is useful to group layers before instancing.
For more information on grouping layers, please see this page.

  1. With the layer you want to instance selected selected,
Right-click and select [ Instantiate across texture sets ].
  2. A new window will open where you can select the texture set to instance.
  3. An [ Instance Source ] icon appears on the instanced layer.

    Click this icon to
The instanced hierarchy is displayed in [ Properties ] with the texture set name and layer name.
  4. Clicking on an instance destination from this hierarchy automatically switches to that layer.

An [ Instance Target ] icon is displayed at the instance destination.
If you want to free the instance, please delete this layer.

Summary

We have confirmed how to instantiate layers.

If you instantiate a layer that uses an ID Map, the same ID Map will be applied to the instance destination, so you must bake it with the same color in advance.

For more information about ID Map, please refer to this page.
Please refer to this page for instructions on how to update your bakes.

On the next page, we'll see how to add materials to the ID Map directly on the viewport!
Next page Let’s go!
